Another major western Kansas City, Kansas tourist destination, Schlitterbahn Vacation Village, opened in the summer of 2009.

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village is a 370 acre destination water park and year-round resort, being built just east of Kansas Speedway and the Village West retail and entertainment district.

In addition to the water park, Schlitterbahn Vacation Village will feature a riverwalk with destination retail, dining and entertainment, a full-service hotel, waterfront cabins, a unique Treehaus Resort with elevated pods, and other destination attractions.

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village will open in phases. A portion of the waterpark opened for summer seasonal operations in July 2009, and the lodging, riverwalk shops, restaurants and other attractions will open in stages through 2011.

On another front, a proposal to build a destination casino at Kansas Speedway in western Kansas City, Kansas is under consideration by the state of Kansas.
