Kansas Speedway is a 1.5 mile tri-oval racetrack located in western Kansas City, Kansas, near the intersection of I-70 and I-435.

The race track opened in summer 2001, with Jeff Gordon winning the first Winston Cup Series race held on September 29, 2001.

The speedway currently seats nearly 82,000 spectators in the grandstands, and will eventually expand to seat up to 150,000 race fans upon completion of its final phase of development.

With the number of visitors on a NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race weekend, Kansas Speedway would be the fourth-largest city in the state of Kansas.

Parking is always free at Kansas Speedway, and the Speedway can accommodate more than 65,000 parked vehicles.

Besides hosting Nextel Cup Series and other race events, Kansas Speedway also hosts non-race related events, such as the Kansas City Bikers for Babies Ride and the GoodGuys Mid Western Nationals Car Show.

For the adventurous race fan who may want a hands on experience, the speedway hosts several stock car and open-wheel driving schools throughout the year.

The driving schools include The Richard Petty Driving Experience, The Racing Experience, The Dale Jarrett Racing Adventure, The Jeff Gordon Racing School and the Mario Andretti Racing School.

In February 2010, Kansas Entertainment, LLC gained final approval from the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission to build the Hollywood Casino, a destination casino to be built off of turn of the speedway. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2010, with the casino opening scheduled for 2012

The construction of Kansas Speedway has also been a catalyst for new commercial development in Western Kansas City Kansas.

The most prominent developments to date are Village West, a popular retail and entertainment district, located adjacent to the Kansas Speedway, and Schlitterbahn Vacation Village, a destination waterpark being built approximately a mile east of the speedway.
