Since the construction of the Kansas Speedway, western Wyandotte County has experienced a boom in commercial development few could have imagined prior to its construction.

The most prominent commercial development to date is the Village West retail and entertainment district, located adjacent to the Kansas Speedway.

The district's latest addition, The Legends at Village West, held its grand opening celebration in spring 2006.

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village is a 370 acre destination water park and year-round resort, being built just east of Kansas Speedway and the Village West retail and entertainment district, in western Kansas City, Kansas.

In addition to the water park, Schlitterbahn Vacation Village will feature a riverwalk with destination retail, dining and entertainment, a full-service hotel, waterfront cabins, a unique Treehaus Resort with elevated pods, and other destination attractions.

The Schlitterbahn Vacation Village groundbreaking ceremony was held September 18, 2007. Schlitterbahn Vacation Village will open in phases, with several lodging components and initial riverwalk shops and restaurants scheduled to open in the summer of 2009.
